How GIKI GPA and CGPA are calculated
GIK Institute assigns each letter grade a number of Grade Points per Credit Hour, and your semester GPA is the total grade points earned divided by the total credit hours registered for that semester. The maximum possible GPA is 4.00, and the CGPA applies the same calculation across every course you have taken.
GIKI grades on a curve, so the marks behind a letter move with the cohort rather than sitting at a fixed threshold. That is why this calculator asks for the letter grade from your transcript instead of offering a marks-to-grade conversion that would be wrong as often as it was right.
The scale is the full eleven-grade HEC table on .67 and .33 steps, from A (4.00) down to F (0.00). It is one of the few things about GIKI that matches the national default exactly.
The Formula
Total grade points of a course = GPC × Credit HoursSGPA = Σ (GPC × Credit Hours) ÷ Σ (Credit Hours) // one semesterCGPA = Σ (GPC × Credit Hours) ÷ Σ (Credit Hours) // all coursesGPC is the GIKI term for Grade Points per Credit Hour. W and I carry no credit and are left out of both sums. An F is different: it scores 0.00 but keeps its credit hours in the divisor.
Worked Examples
Example 1: one semester's GPA
A 16-credit-hour engineering semester using GIKI grade points.
| Course 1, 3 CH, A (4.00) | 3 × 4.00 = 12.00 |
|---|---|
| Course 2, 4 CH, A- (3.67) | 4 × 3.67 = 14.68 |
| Course 3, 3 CH, B+ (3.33) | 3 × 3.33 = 9.99 |
| Course 4, 3 CH, B (3.00) | 3 × 3.00 = 9.00 |
| Course 5, 3 CH, C+ (2.33) | 3 × 2.33 = 6.99 |
| Total grade points | 12.00 + 14.68 + 9.99 + 9.00 + 6.99 = 52.66 |
| Total credit hours | 3 + 4 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 16 |
Example 2: repeating a course at GIKI
A 3-credit course first taken for a C (2.00) and repeated for a B+ (3.33). GIKI counts only the most recent grade.
| Original attempt, not counted | 3 × 2.00 = 6.00 (ignored) |
|---|---|
| Most recent attempt, counted | 3 × 3.33 = 9.99 |
| Gain in grade points | 9.99 − 6.00 = 3.99 |
Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute of Engineering Sciences & Technology Grading Scale
GIK Institute letter grades and their Grade Points per Credit Hour. There is no marks column: GIKI grades on a curve, so the percentage behind each letter shifts with the cohort rather than sitting at a fixed threshold.
| Grade | Grade Points |
|---|---|
| A | 4.00 |
| A- | 3.67 |
| B+ | 3.33 |
| B | 3.00 |
| B- | 2.67 |
| C+ | 2.33 |
| C | 2.00 |
| C- | 1.67 |
| D+ | 1.33 |
| D | 1.00 |
| F | 0.00 |
Frequently Asked Questions
If I repeat a course, which grade counts?
The most recent one, even if it is lower. The GIKI handbook says that when a course is repeated, only the most recent grade is used to calculate the GPA, although every course taken still appears on the final transcript. This is unusual. Many universities count the better attempt, so do not assume a repeat can only help you.
How do W and I grades affect my GPA?
Not at all. The GIKI handbook marks both W for withdrawn and I for incomplete as "No Credit, not counted in the calculation of GPA". They carry no grade points, and their credit hours drop out of the divisor too. Leave those courses out of the calculator. Entering them with a zero would understate your GPA.
What is the difference between an F and a W?
An F costs you twice, a W costs you nothing arithmetically. An F contributes 0.00 grade points while its credit hours stay in the denominator; a W is excluded from both sides of the calculation. That difference is exactly why the withdrawal deadline matters.
Why can't I enter marks instead of a letter grade?
Because GIKI grades relatively. There is no fixed percentage that maps to a letter, so the same raw score can produce different grades in different courses or years. Entering the letter from your transcript is the only way to get an accurate GPA.
What is the maximum GPA at GIKI?
4.00. The handbook says so directly. The top grade A is worth exactly 4.00 grade points per credit hour, so there is no way to go above it. GIKI does not award an A+ worth more than 4.00.
What CGPA do I need to stay in good standing?
The minimum semester GPA to remain in satisfactory academic standing is 2.00, and a bachelor's degree requires a CGPA of at least 2.00. A student on probation is limited to a reduced course load, usually 10 to 13 credit hours, which makes recovery slower. So aim above 2.00, not at it.
